Polulonia - Baratti (LI) training camp

An ancient Etruscan city, Populonia stands on the northern tip of the Piombino promontory, with a beautiful view of the sea. Surrounded by nature, this locality was one of the twelve centers of the Dodecapolis, city-states that were part of Etruria, the only one to rise on the coast line. Even today it contains many treasures, even from different eras. Starting from the fortress, located at the top of the hill.

Built on the acropolis of ancient Pupluna and then built in the first half of the 15th century, the fortress stands out among the narrow and paved streets of the historic center, where old shops, bars and small shops alternate. Here time seems to have stopped in a bygone era and, even today, you can admire the remains of the ancient city, between Etruscan walls, ancient Roman and medieval buildings, including the turret that offers, once reached, a stunning 360 ° view. The view from here is truly wonderful and also takes you back to the Gulf of Baratti, which opens up at the south-eastern end of the Ligurian Sea.

Here there is a free beach, preceded by pine forests, but also many Etruscan remains that extend between the Archaeological Park of Baratti and Populonia, where the remains of the ancient city can be found. Divided between the upper and lower parts, the park shows two necropolises of the Etruscan phase, the quarries and the ancient industrial districts where people worked to produce iron; as well as temples, buildings, huts and mosaics created along the walls and dating back to the Roman phase. Not just history and archeology. In this area you can follow the paths or go trekking, perhaps following the ancient walls, inside the park, or climbing along the wooded path of Via delle Cave to the Belvedere, to admire the bay of Baratti from above.

For lovers of the outdoors and sports, there will be no need to get bored: in fact, there are several itineraries proposed to discover these beautiful places, following the roads lined with rocks, through the woods or, again, along the Mediterranean scrub. From the ancient city to the inlets, you can also go towards the ruins of the Benedictine monastery of San Quirico, an ecclesiastical complex located on the slopes of Poggio Tondo. Then back down, towards the sea and the reddish beaches, colored in this way due to the mineral residues associated with the extraction of iron in the Etruscan era.
